A great post that reminds readers about the transcendence of narrative writing across genres (and across subjects!) The teacher uses historical and science fiction as inspiration for her ELA students' writing projects, but ideas, such as the "What if . . ." digital presentation project she mentions from Larry Ferlazzo could be used in almost any subject. The author's ideas for having students prove their informational research are also very helpful. I loved reading the post, too. Her, "Nobody puts baby in a corner," quote made me laugh out loud.
Teach your students how to evaluate their own writing with kid-friendly rubrics. Based on Common Core grade-level expectations, criteria are clear and scoring is simple.

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
An article by NEA President Dennis Van Roekel covering areas including:
"How Are They Developed?"
"What do the Common Core State Standards Cover?"
"What Is Special About These Standards?"
"What Can The Standards Accomplish?"
"What Happens After the Standards Are Adopted in States?"
"What Else is Needed to Improve Education?"
Given the newly refined ability to distinguish between teachers and their effectiveness, and the imperative brought on by the Common Core standards (CCSS) to deliver instruction at a more sophisticated level, it is no longer reasonable or tenable to keep treating teachers the same

Great way to grasp a better understanding of the Common Core standards. This site also provide a variety of resources and lessons for teachers.
A new educational software program being implemented this year in our schools' extended day program is Kids College. This program is through a company named Learning Through Sports.
LTD helps students with literacy, math and science. It is an adaptive program that works at each students level. Teachers do not always have the time to differentiate instruction. This program adapts to the students level and works on the gaps in their knowledge.
The way the program works is that it motivates the students using their competitive nature. Student chose a team and the sport they want to play. The level they are working on is independent of their contribution to the success of the team. The team succeeds as long as the student succeeds. After answering questions they move through the levels by participating in the sport of their choice. The sports they students can play are: basketball, snowboard, golf, foosball, hockey, rugby or baseball. The video games have wonderful graphics which are attractive to the players.
The program is aligned with the state standards and the common core standards. It provides reports of students success for teachers, students and parents.
"Illustrative Mathematics provides guidance to states, assessment consortia, testing companies, and curriculum developers by illustrating the range and types of mathematical work that students experience in a faithful implementation of the Common Core State Standards, and by publishing other tools that support implementation of the standards."
Professional development is important - we should try to continually learn and grow as teachers - so good thing the FL Dept of Education website has a page listing some upcoming conferences and workshops (http://www.fldoe.org/JustForTeachers/conferences.asp). This, however, is a FREE webinar called "Preparing Teachers to Implement the Common Core State Standards." It is next Tuesday, Jan 29 2013, from 1:00-2:00 PM. I'm not sure if it will be archived for later viewing.
Quote from story, "These proficiency scores do not reflect a drop in performance, but rather a raising of standards to reflect college and career readiness in the 21 century."
Assessment of student mastery of content takes many forms. This pages includes support materials for assessments that work with the Common Core State Standards and rubrics for many different assessment products. It also contains some information on the creation of rubrics and assessment in general.
A place for teachers to visit to find lessons connected to comprehension skills such as author's purpose, compare and contrast, and prediction. You can search by grade level and even alignment to the Common Core Standards. If you are a K-6 teacher that enjoys teaching with picturebooks, then this is worth checking out!
